Concrete walls or hollow-block walls are not sufficient to ensure a full waterproofing and avoid leakage of swimming pools. A full waterproofing system should be applied before putting the swimming pool in service.

Instead pool builders relied on the density and thickness of the concrete pool shell; the relative impermeability of the surface coatings applied to the concrete pool form; as well as epoxy seals and expandable foams to seal around penetrations like pipes etc.
Waterproofing system should be applied with pools, fountains, water tanks, or drainpipes during the construction period in order to prevent the loss of water. Remedial waterproofing can be a risky and costly operation.
